How to memorize English words without forgetting
Forgetting words is normal. The solution is not to study harder for one day; it is to study in a way that makes your brain retrieve the word many times over several days.
The five-step memory method
- Learn the word with one clear example
- Guess the meaning before revealing it again
- Say the word aloud and listen to pronunciation
- Use the word in a sentence that matters to you
- Review missed words tomorrow, not next month
Why lists alone are weak
- A list can help you discover words, but it does not prove you can remember them
- Recognition is easier than active recall
- A word becomes useful when you can remember it during speaking or writing
OxWord practice loop
- Match pairs to test recall
- Use flashcards for fast repetition
- Keep daily goals small
- Let XP and streaks make review visible
